The City University of New York Graduate School of Journalism will host its first annual Global Film Series, “The World Through Women’s Eyes,” on April 7-8. The festival will feature films from Afghanistan, India, Haiti, Liberia and the Congo that explore social issues related to women worldwide. The series will also explore the intersection of journalism, documentary film and activism.
We have found that the immediacy of film and the images of women who have suffered and triumphed is an effective way to maintain and spread conversations and spark reporting so vital in keeping the focus on troubling issues like sexual violence, forced marriage, denial of rights of employment and education, “honor killings” and sexual slavery. We hope to foster news and action.
The festival will feature films selected from several regions of the world from the Americas, Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe and the Pacific: “The Sari Soldiers”, “Sisters of the Good Death”, “Poto Mitan”, “The Greatest Silence” and “Frontrunner”.
This year’s panel discussions will look at the plight of women around the globe. It will consider film’s role in illuminating women’s suffering and ask whether film can force or inspire action that leads to change. We plan to have interviews with newsmakers, panel discussions and conversations with filmmakers, activists, journalists and officials.
As journalists and educators of future journalists, we see it as our responsibility to make sure the stories of women are told boldly and passionately.
